Function is about what the work is made for, it's not as in depth as Purpose. (It's very surface level of the work)

TYPES OF FUNCTION

1) Expressive/Conceptual

Expressive

  • Made for the artist to express his personal thoughts/emotions

  • Work is autobiographical/Based on own experiences

  • Thus, functions as a form of expression

Conceptual

  • Made to express a concept 

  • Using certain materials/medium to convey a message

  • Bring across an idea through art

​

2) Political/Social/Cultural etc.

  • Provide a Perspective/Opinion/Reflection/Satire on ...

    • Eg. Political Issues/Commercialisation

  • Serves to Challenge/Question ...

    • Eg. Government/Traditions/Beauty Standards

PURPOSE

Purpose is an in depth exploration & explanation of the concept of the artwork

Most of the time, the work you selected have a lot of central ideas/subjects that is touched on

  • Think of it like an essay & Purpose is the 2/3 main points/arguments

TYPES OF PURPOSE

DESCRIPTION + SUBJECT

eg.

  • Commentary on _______ Issues

  • Juxtaposition between (eg. Past & Present/Uniformity & Individual/Commercial & Traditional)

  • Documents (eg. the marginalised communities)

  • Importance on (eg. Traditional Customs)

FORMATTING:

EXPRESSIVE FUNCTION                          

The work allows the artist express his thoughts & opinions on the

  • Furthermore, the artist aims to question ….

This is portrayed in the use of (An Element of Art mentioned in your Formal Analysis)

  • If you do, feel free to change it up in terms of formatting

  • Format it to your own colour schemes or styles etc.

  • And remember to always consult your mentors along the way!!

TIP : BREAK UP THE TEXT MORE

  • Looking back, I actually find my CS to be pretty wordy

  • So, I would suggest using Bullet points, Arrows, Lines to break it up more

TIP : FIND SUPPORTING IMAGES

  • It may take some time, but using images other than your works can help

  • It provides context and more insight for your marker

  • Use the keywords in the work to search
