A. CURATION NOTES

Anchor 1

Look back at your favourite exhibitions? What makes them stand out or unique to you? Curating can be a really fun & exciting process, so here are some notes & tips you can consider.

1. Outcome of the Exhibition

  • What is the goal of your show?

    • Is it meant to inspire/provoke/document/question etc.

  • What is the main takeaway you want the audience to have from your show?

    • Eg. To allow audience to reflect on their cultural identity

    • Eg. For audience to reflect on man's impact on biodiversity

  • Beginning with the end goal in mind allows you to envision the final outcome

    • Therefore making more meaningful considerations & decisions at every step

3. Overall Mood & Tone

  • What kind of atmosphere do you aim to create?

  • This will help when you are thinking of creating a narrative & choosing how to set up each work

Examples :

  • Playful/child-like wonder?

    • Works are arranged like a playground

  • Private & Intimate setting?

    • Space mimics your bedroom or a home setting

  • Grotesque & Uncomfortable?

2. Create a Narrative

  • What is the story you want to tell through the journey of your works?

  • Is your set-up suppose to resemble a place

    • Eg. Your bedroom, A shop, A void deck, A supermarket

  • How does that add to your overall concept?

    • Eg. An intimate setting creates for a more meaningful experience etc.

  • Is there a beginning and end?

    • Eg. Work 1 introduces the theme of … , Work 5 is entering into the new sub-theme of …, Work 8 is the conclusion of the overall theme …

4. Create an experience for the viewers

  • How do the audience walk through your space?

    • Is it in a clockwise/anti-clockwise direction or random pattern

    • How does add it to the experience for them

  • How is each work placed and how is it meant to be experienced?

    • Is it interactive/immersive?

    • Is it small & intimate?

For more, you can refer to the notes on Curatorial Rationale to see how you will write about your exhibition intention for your curation.

B. WHERE TO START?

Step 1 : Know the Limitations of the Space

  • What are the spaces in the gallery are you proposing to get? or What is the space you’re allocated in the gallery?

  • What are the limitations?

    • Eg. Hanging poles can only be in the right corner, the left wall cannot drill

    • Eg. Electrical sockets only on this side

Step 2 : Work around the Limitations

  • Place the works that need to be in specific spot due to technical limitations in the space itself

    • After that, work around them, use that as a starting point

  • Tweak your narrative if you have to

    • On the day itself, it may change & that's really normal so you'll have to adapt to the circumstances

Step 3 : Sketches

  • Do as many sketches of your works in the space(s)

  • Try to really envision being the space IRL

  • Consider the scale of your works & roughly gauge it onto the dimensions of your space

    • The dimensions of the gallery space will be given to you

Step 4 : Create Mock Ups

  • This is optional

  • But it really helps you get a feel of the space & how each work looks beside the other

Sample of My Mock Up

  • I did this using photoshop & spent way to much time on this

  • Very time consuming, but it was fun for me ahaha

TIP : Use Google Slides for Mock Up

  • Takes very little time & Easy to rearrange & play around with the works

  • I did the sample for fun, literally took me around 30 mins

C. TECHNICAL SET UP PLAN

After planning out the layout, it's good to plan out the details for the technical aspects too! From my personal experience learning from mentors and seniors, it is important to have all details of the set up before the day itself.

So here’s a rough template you can follow that shows you how to prepare for the set up.
